Nestled in the heart of the Western Cape, just 10 kilometers outside the charming town of Piketberg, lies Nieuwedrift Wine Estate, a family-owned gem that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. Established as a beacon of fine dining, exquisite wines, and warm hospitality, Nieuwedrift offers visitors a unique experience that reflects the rich heritage and passion of the Mostert family.
The story of Nieuwedrift began in 2002 when Johan Mostert, driven by a deep love for the land and its fruits, ventured into winemaking. With guidance from his friend and mentor, Marais de Villiers, Johan crafted his first batch of wine, a fruity Chenin Blanc, followed by a robust, barrel-matured Shiraz. These early successes marked the beginning of a new chapter for the estate, expanding its offerings beyond the generations-old tradition of wheat and sheep farming.
In 2017, the Nieuwedrift experience evolved further with the opening of the estate’s restaurant. On November 11th of that year, the doors were opened to a space where food, art, and community converge. The restaurant is not just a place to dine; it’s a celebration of local, artisanal suppliers, emphasizing seasonal and sustainable ingredients that delight the palate. The atmosphere is inviting, with child- and pet-friendly spaces, including a play park and expansive green lawns that encourage relaxation and family fun.
Inside the restaurant, guests can also explore the artistic soul of Nieuwedrift through the works of resident artist Karin Mostert. Her gallery, housed within the restaurant, showcases a range of captivating paintings that reflect the beauty and essence of the surrounding landscape.
In 2022, Nieuwedrift expanded its offerings to include comfortable and charming accommodations, thanks to Karin Mostert’s vision. Whether guests are visiting for a wine-tasting experience, a gourmet meal, or a peaceful stay in the countryside, they will find a warm welcome and a sense of belonging at Nieuwedrift.

The Mostert Family Winery: A Legacy of Excellence
Since 1965, the Mostert family has been dedicated to the art of viticulture, specializing in the cultivation of wine grapes. It wasn’t until 2002 that Johan Mostert, the current winemaker, ventured into winemaking himself. With the guidance and support of his friend and mentor, Marais de Villiers, Johan crafted his first wine—a fruity Chenin Blanc—marking the beginning of a new chapter for the family. His success was soon followed by the introduction of a barrel-matured Shiraz, expanding the family’s offerings.
Today, Nieuwedrift continues to uphold this legacy, producing a diverse range of wines that reflect the family’s passion and expertise. The portfolio now includes a Méthod Cap Classique, Shiraz, Blanc de Noir, and a Lightly Wooded Chardonnay. In 2022, Johan’s son, Hendrik Mostert, joined the winemaking efforts, introducing two sparkling wines to the collection: Méthod Ancestrale Rosé and Méthod Ancestrale Chenin Blanc.
The Mostert family winery now proudly offers seven distinct wines, all crafted from three carefully selected cultivars, continuing a tradition of excellence and innovation in winemaking.
